Here are some tips to help you save energy
Use the timer on your immersion heater.
Take a shower instead of a bath
Activate the ‘energy saving mode’ on your computer
Switch off the screen instead of using a screen saver, and turn off the computer when not in use
Defrost your fridge and freezer once every six months
Make sure the door seals on the fridge and freezer are fitted tightly
Let food cool down before you put it in the fridge or freezer
Put lids on pots and pans when the water starts to boil and reduce the heat
When using a microwave, stir or turn the food to reduce cooking time
Do not open the oven door to check cooking
Only boil the amount of water required when using a kettle
Only wash a full load of washing and select the lowest water temperature required
Only wash a full load in the dishwasher and always use the economy button
Fix dripping hot water taps
Choose heaters with thermostat controls and timers
Turn off the heating overnight and when you are not in the house
Heat bedrooms to less than 18oC
20oC is the ideal room temperature for a living room
Close doors to separate heated and unheated rooms in the house
Keep curtains closed at night and make sure they don’t hang over the radiators
Fit a lagging jacket on the hot water cylinder
Fit CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) light bulbs throughout the property
Always check the energy labels when purchasing appliances and whenever possible purchase ‘A’ rated appliances
